Finish Line Celebrations

On this past Saturday I had the honor of holding the finishing tape for the winner of the 2011 Nashville Rock nā Roll Country Music Marathon. As I was waiting for the winner to make his final strides to the finish I was enjoying watching thousands of people stream across the half marathon finish line. I love to watch people finish races, especially when they show their triumphant emotion.
As I was watching, I noticed that celebrating seemed to be contagious. If one finisher got bold and raised their arms in celebration then a whole stream of runners behind would follow suit. However, it went both ways. There were also dry spells when no one seemed to be enjoying the finish line at all. It was a great illustration to me of how we all effect one another. We may not think that us celebrating our own race will effect anyone else but it does. Our attitudes are contagious. A celebratory attitude also inspires those who are watching. My thanks to everyone who races and celebrates those final strides. I enjoy watching you and you subtly shift the racing atmosphere.
